History

When I was 18 years old our old Groninger mare “Nellie” was replaced for a tractor. This was typical for that time where mechanization of the agricultural world changed our lives drastically. Only twelve years later, this world changed again. The horses came back! Horse riding became a civil sport and a new type of horse was needed. Crossbreeding the old mares with English Thoroughbred or Trakehner stallions resulted in the production of sport horses for show jumping and dressage.
Labatsje (pictured mare) was such a product. Her dam was from an old Groningen/Oldenburg mare line with excellent working capacity in the field. Crossbreeding with Flaneur (Apollo x Semper- Idem) was the first step in the direction of modern sport horses. Labatsje received the predicates “keur” and “preferent”. Keur means that she had excellent exterior and gaits, in addition with good offspring and a successful exam of a specific horse test (IBOP). Preferent means that she had at least an offspring of three that had received the predicate “ster”, which stands for very good exterior and gaits. Labatsje is the starting point of my sport horse breeding activity. For me personally she was also the horse which gave me very much riding pleasure, because on her back I learned what horse riding was. She was used not only as a breeding mare but also as a riding horse in our local riding school. Riding her was such a pleasure that I concluded that my breeding hobby had to start with offspring of her.
In 1980 on the “Rodermarkt”, I was able to buy my first KWPN horse: Wabatsje. She was by Palfrenier, a modern stallion from combined Holstein and Trakehner origin.
Wabatsje is still with us, now 29 years old, but still the “boss” in the herd.
The second successful line was started a few years later, when I bought the filly Dabatsa from a daughter of Labatsje, Sabatsje. These two horses produced an offspring which is now spread all over the world, from Egypt to Honduras and from Norway to Italy. The aim of this site is to introduce you into this very successful breeding family and I hope that anybody in the world, owning or riding offspring of Labatsje will have the same pleasure of that horse that I had, riding her.
